First, check with your adoption agency.  It may have a list of resources for children and parents.

Second, talk to folks at the Center for Adoption Support and Education.  It has Maryland offices in Burtonsville and Riverdale.  It provides post-adoption support for adoptive and foster families, such as counseling, parent support groups, workshops for parents and kids, and so on.  It also works with schools, police, and community organizations to promote understanding of issues confronting adoptive families, and trains therapists and other professionals in techniques that work with adoptive families.  It is not an adoption agency.  You can visit the CASE website at

Hello, My husband and I live in Arlington VA. we adopted two older children from India 2.5 years ago. they are now about 6 and 8.5 years old. Our family has all appearances of being harmonious and wonderful (the facebook version is dreamy), but beneath the surface are major difficulties. Our older son in particular, has a range of problems that suggest deep trauma from his past. We use a combination of medication and therapy to hold things together. We just started working with CASE.

We would welcome a support group! If you have any information, please do share! Thank you!

I’d love to connect with other families in Maryland and Virginia. We are in Howard County.

you might want to call local agencies and see if they have one. You can start one. I think there is support to start support groups at

Does you mental health provider have one? Maybe they would be willing to provide space etc.
