gaining perspective

I am coming to the realization that while I cannot always protect my daughter for those who are insensitive about adoption- I CAN be there to listen and validate any and all of her feelings along the way…

Mel:
You make a great distinction. As parents we’re unable to shelter them from the realities. It is essential not to trivialize the experiences they face. In the desire to soften their hurts it’s easy to minimize their experience by encouraging them to make it feel “minor.”
It’s important that they learn to cope and not be over-reactive, but it is equally important to honor the “realness” of the hurt. We can prepare them to respond in ways that feel empowering for them and work to create a healthier understanding of adoption.
Painful words/encounters can dedge up loss/grief abandonment issues. Assist kids in being empowered in the face of these difficult encounters.
