ethics in adoptions

After I heard about the TLC show “Birth Moms” I decided to find out more and was once again, shocked….I am interested in what others think of this show and the system in general? Am I over-reacting to it all? (I admittedly am hyper sensitive so maybe I read too much into it all?) So I would love to hear what others think on the subject…

“Side note- in retrospect, I should have looked more carefully at the part of the websites that are not meant for prospective adoptive parents but the part meant for expectant parents…”

I think that is one of the first parts of a site one should go to.

I agree 100%!

I watched this show and was appalled at how the whole situation was portrayed.

The emoms had multiple issues (edad in prison, all three emoms were already parenting young kids, one emom admitted to previous prostitution, emom smoking and drinking alcohol, one emom got pregnant when she was passed out and unaware that she was having sex, etc.)  I am sure that most emoms have some type of personal problems ( youth, poverty, substance abuse, uninvolved partner) if they are considering placing their babies.  However, this show capitalized on such negative stereotypes of birthmoms.

I did think that the emoms love for their babies was obvious.  And how agonizing it was for them to make the decision not to parent.

I was not impressed with the adoption agency either.  The counselors did not seem to be plugged in to either the emoms or the APs.

I hope this does not become a regular show.

Since I don’t watch much TV, I didn’t know this was on until an hour before. A friend called me to watch it. Was this the first in a series? Or just one show? This was just awful! It doesn’t seem real from many angles. The Moms seemed very staged…as if they were coached to act badly. The adoption agency people seemed far too complacent, not involved, not caring. For anyone. Perhaps this show was made just to be shocking.

It is a disgusting show and should be put of the air.  Making money off a tragedy…. sick.

I never actually saw it but I am horrified by this concept and the negative image it gives towards adoption. I also hope it doesn’t continue and is never repeated….I agree it was meant to shock and it did- but hopefully, the shock meant enough people were disgusted and it won’t become anything more than an awful one time event.
