Adoption Agencies (Reviews)

Wide Horizons for Children (WHFC)

Hi. My husband and I are starting the adoption process after numerous failed IVF treatments.  Has anyone used Wide Horizons for Children (WHFC) for adoption?  We are looking at a domestic adoption but are open for feedback that anyone may have had with this agency.I have seen some negative reviews posted from 2008.  After spending a fortune on IVF we would like to make sure we have a positive experience with adoption

Hi - I’d be happy to speak with you about WHFC. Long story…when we started we thought we would do try both international and domestic to see what happened first. By the time our home study was done most countries that they had in their book were “on hold” for one reason or another. China was taking 4-5 years, Ethiopia was 2-3, most of the other Asian countries were not accepting new cases, and all the South American and Central American countries the same. We were not interested in Russia. That turned out to be good because WHFC had about 50 couples in the NY area who had placements disrupted when the Russians ended US adoptions.

When were realized the limited options for international we put all our focus on domestic, at which point were were told by WHFC that “that was really hard.” We were planning on doing a lot of the searching for expectant mothers so we felt ok moving forward. I thought that our profile would be shown periodically but it never was. There were very few occasions when they had e moms.

We went full force with placing ads ourselves and hiring a lawyer out of state who put our profile in front of e moms.

We paid WHFC to do our home study and post-placement.

I want to also state that we adopted a newborn. I know that WHFC has young children available but we were not open to that.

Thank you for the post.  I was told by WHFC that they adopt newborns domestically but then I read they do not have a very strong domestic base.  I would be interested in hearing your story. This is all very new, How difficult was it to find a lawyer to put your portfolio infront of e mom and how long did the process take

We used WHFC and did so on word of mouth as my husband’s cousin used them for the domestic adoption of their daughter. While our HS took about 6 months to complete, we had a good experience with them and we were matched very quickly after our HS was completed. Even our SW was suprised how fast. We live in CT and adopted from New Hampshire. Good luck to you.

I don’t know about this particular agency, but just know that you don’t have to limit yourself to just one agency. Many agency’s have low up front fees and encourage you to increase your chances for a quicker match. I adopted 2.5 years ago with the help of a consultant who taught me this model, which worked well for me. In turn, I’m now doing the same for others. If you want to learn more, please PM me. Happy to share. Either way, Embrace the process. It’s an exciting time.

We adopted both of our very healthy AA babies domestically through Wide Horizons. We were placed very quickly in both cases. We, too, chose WHFC originally for its international work. When various international programs were restricted, we shifted to domestic, and WHFC served us well. One adoption happened via WHFC connection with other agencies, and the other directly through WHFC. While no adoption is without bumps and stressful angles, and social workers have their own individual strengths and personalities, the agency seems solid. We are very happy.
