Where to start?

My husband and I have made a decision to adopt as we cannot have children; however we have no idea where to start. I have been researching for about 6 months and still have no idea where to start. Our family cannot afford $30,000+ through an agency so we are trying to figure out if there are any other options. Can anyone give us any suggestions on where to start our journey? Thank you so much!

Unfortunately, most private newborn adoptions (and int’l adoptions) do cost around 30k or more. I’m sure there are cheaper agencies around but consistently when figures are given (from a variety of sources) the cost seems to be 30+.

Have you thought about foster care or foster to adopt? It’s a much different process and with different risks but fees wouldn’t be a concern. Fostering certainly isn’t best for every family but it’s something I’d suggest looking into to see if it’s a fit for your family.

If you wish to continue with private newborn adoption, there are ways to finance it. Save as much as you can by cutting out unnecessary spending (even if it will take you years). Maybe look into additional part time work. There is a tax credit which can help on the back end. Many people do fundraising. There are adoption grants; however, I wouldn’t expect to receive those for domestic newborn adoption. There are adoption loans available as well.

As far as where to start, I’d say this website is a decent place to start for reviews on agencies. Then, call as many agencies as you want and ask questions. Talk to them about financing, wait times, your preferences, birth mother expenses.

I will recommend staying away from agencies that require a huge sum of money upfront before (or even at) a match. If the match fails or you never match with them, you are out a lot of money. There are a ton of agencies that require relatively low up front fees which will prevent you from being locked in.

Good luck as you begin this journey.
