U.S. Foster Adoption Waiting
Submitted our first inquiry on waiting sibs
Over the weekend - we submitted an inquiry for a pair of siblings ages 7 and 9. We have 3 bio kids - ages 14, 12, and 9. We initially started the adoption process a year ago looking at international adoption and then began pursuing infant adoption through our local agency.
We have been part of the waiting parents group with our agency for 4 months now and our profile has been viewed but we haven’t been chosen.
Through reading posts on this site and getting to know more about the different approaches to adoption - I thought it absolutely couldn’t hurt to look into adopting from foster care. Our biggest concern was that our only options would be for legal risk placements.
I would love to hear from folks who have submitted an inquiry on a waiting child or sibling group. What happens next? I received a form email from the kids’ caseworker saying thanks for the inquiry and all interested families will be evaluated for the pair.

Usually you only hear something back if you are 1-4 families the caseworkers want to interview. You may hear absolutely nothing otherwise. It’s my understanding that caseworkers will accept homestudies from a month to a few months and they usually get many that they must look through.
Continue to submit inquiries on other children you are interested in. Try not to get your hopes up too high on one child or sibling set/group. It’s highly likely you’ll make many more inquiries in the future.
Best of luck on your journey!
How do they tell if we are one of the families they want to interview? There was very minimal information requested in the inquiry form. Do they get our homestudy, etc from our caseworker before deciding who to interview?
Thanks for the info!!!
I am single and have no biological children. Over a year and a half, I inquired about 55 sibling pairs under the age of 12 (no other restrictions). I heard from about 5 social workers total. I was interviewed by a panel (guardian as litem, casa, social workers, counselors for the children, etc) as one of two potential families for a pair of 11 year old twins in Florida, but in the end I was not selected. I then surrendered the $4,000 my agency had charged for the home study, etc. and enrolled in my city’s Foster Parent training. (Entirely new home study and training - from scratch.) I did respite care on weekends for 2 months after I was approved, and then I was leant out to a neighboring county as a full time foster parent to a 1 year old and 4 year old. If the parental rights are terminated, I will ask to adopt, but until then, I’m foster parenting! In fact, I’m typing this on my smartphone from a shopping center parking lot near the courthouse while the social worker took the kids to a nearby park for a visit with their mother. Such a glamorous life!
Seriously though, so rewarding.
if their at all interested in you, they’ll contact your social worker for your homestudy. aftter that, there is generally about a month of waiting until your worker will either be contacted by their worker to notify you that you’re up for consideration, or you’ll hear nothing. it’s very frustrating. best of luck
Its a very frustrating process. We’ve inquired on a dozen or 20 sibling groups…I’ve lost track. Generally they don’t get back to me, a few of them have. some of the better ones get back to me with a more detailed list of the children’s issues and ask if I have the resources to handle them. A lot of social workers have a different process. I also advise to not get too attached to one group or child, because a lot more rejections will happen for you before things work out. I know that’s hard, but good luck!
