Thank you. We received an answer to our question today.

It totally depends on your agencies’ policies. I am not aware of any *laws* that prevent adopting a child from foster care and a child privately at the same time, or in close proximity to one another. However, individual agencies will almost definitely have policies about this.

Either adoption is an iffy proposition. The family at church should be receiving impartial counseling and exploring resources to parent. When adopting from foster care, “soon” is relative. Anecdotally, there can be many wrenches thrown into the process, appeal hearings, and so on. Just throwing that out there to be realistic, not trying to rain on your parade.

The agency we went through for our adoption had a rule that we could not adopt within 6 months of our daughter being placed with us.  I don’t know if there are any state specific laws about it.  Our agency wanted us to get back to “normal” as much as possible before adopting again.
