Pursuing an adoption in Bulgaria
My husband and I are in the process of adopting a child from Bulgaria. We are almost done with our dossier, and will be on the waiting list in Bulgaria soon. I’m really hoping to “talk” with any other families who have already done adopted from this country, or are in the process of doing so.

Be sure that you arrange for your childs citizenship immediately. If anything happens to the two of you prior to obtaining citizenship, your child may be deported.
Wow. Did you learn that through personal experience or through the experience of friends? I’m pretty sure that our agency said the child will become a US citizen as soon as they get to American soil…
It depends on what kind of a visa the child comes over on. I do not understand it but I am sure your agency can help.
Sometimes you have to readopt in your state. I think you still have to file a form no matter what.
I think Adoptive Families did a story on this once.

Regina—thanks for posting that article! I’ll definitely keep all of that in mind when the time comes…
And novemberrain—glad that you messaged me, because I didn’t see this post!
Dossier sent to Bulgaria in June 2012. Translated in July and waiting for registry number with the MOJ. I am using a U.S. Agency that is partnered with VESTA.
MommyD—did you get your registry number yet? We just got ours yesterday—WOO HOO!
We have sent our dossier and we are in the translation phase (so, I assume that it is not registered in MOJ yet). We were notified by our case worker that we would better loosen our requirements so that we can reduce our wait time to a reasonable amount.
Does anyone have any updates about Bulgarian program?
@Nicki- Yes, I registered with the MOJ
in September 2012. Still waiting for a referral. I’ve been told the wait will
be at LEAST two years for a girl under
the age of 8. The exception is to accept a referral of a child with moderate to severe special needs.
