Costa Rica Adoptive Families

Please join this group!

I have been searching the web for a group or message board for families adopting from Costa Rica! Thank you Adoptive Families Circle for creating one here!

Costa Rica reopened its doors to adoption in the Fall of 2009 after closing for a few years to become Hague certified.

Since they have recently reopened, I anticipate more and more families will be searching for this group as well, so please join me!

I am a woman who will be adopting as a single mom and I am hoping to adopt two children from Costa Rica. I know I am one of the first families from my agency to submit to Costa Rica. Because I am first, it is a process where we do not know exactly what to expect (all the more reason to want to talk to others who are doing the same thing…)

As of today, my dossier has been in Costa Rica 24 weeks and 3 days. About 10 weeks after submission, they responded with a set of questions. I answered those and they have been back in country for 9 weeks and 2 days and of course, those weeks include the holiday time frame. I am waiting for them to approve my dossier.

Please join this group if you too are waiting for your child(ren) from Costa Rica. Let me know where you are in the process and what you are going through.

Hi there!  What a treat to stumble across this group - thanks for taking the initiative to start it and invite participation!

My husband and I are currently putting together our dossier for Costa Rica - and as far as we’ve learned, none of our agency’s dossiers have been accepted yet and many were submitted as long ago as last August.  We did hear that a single mom was just “accepted” - is this you?  We’re looking to adopt siblings, too!

What inspired you to adopt from Costa Rica?

I’d love to hear from you and others as this process unfolds.  For example, were the questions PANI send you about the types of children you’d be willing to parent?  Have you had to redo your dossier?  Any advice for those of us in the “dossier” stage? Thanks! ABKVT

We are considering adopting siblings from CR.  We have 3 biological kids - ages 9, 7, & 5.  We have done a lot of reading and praying, but haven’t selected an agency yet.  Considering Welcome House (Pearl S Buck) in PA.

What agency are you guys working with?

Look forward to seeing progress on these trailblazers in CR!

Any comments, advice, considerations are much appreciated!

I was a little down when a half year of CR having my dossier came and went a week or so ago… no I haven’t been approved yet - nor has anyone from my agency when I wrote to them… but we heard the same thing about a single mom being approved as the first American in January from another agency.

I was told she too was over half a year and that they still expect matches to move fairly quickly though this is new for everyone.

I chose CR for a few reasons. When I put my criteria together for a country, it included single parents - of course, being able to adopt siblings at the same time, and a reasonable cost associated. (I thought long and hard about Russia but realized I could end up so in debt that it would affect our quality of life afterwards!) And I took 4 years of Spanish in high school and feel I may be able to help the children save the language as well as communicate in the early days better. And then I had a dream that I had to drive through Nicaragua to get to the next country - before I even started the research - for a very important reason… well that did it for me when I refreshed my geography!

I did get questions about my dossier 9 weeks after submission. They asked a ton of questions that were already answered in the home study but wanted the psychologist to answer. My psychologist was only hired to help with the dossier (I had never met her before), so she had me answer the questions and then put a cover on it. The other thing they asked for was a statement from the State Dept Of Health indicating they had no record of marriage for me.

And so now I wait. May is the year anniversary of my dossier, so I know it will need to be redone before the adoption is complete, but I am hoping for approval before then.

Please let me know how you are progressing!

Ok so I heard from Costa Rica. They did not like how my psychologist had me answer the questions and she put a cover on my answers. They clearly want a report written by the psychologist… so it is back to the drawing board and hoping they will let me resubmit the report!

Hi i’m new and actually in the process of adopting through foster care in the US but i was wondering what type of stay if any does Costa Rica require,  i’m half Costa Rican so in a lot of ways i think it would be neat to adopt from there as well. i looked into it awhile ago, but that was when it was closed and my only option was to get my dual citizenship and spend a fair amount of time down there (which i would love since i eventually want to move there but for now my job limits me to 2 weeks at a time)  what other qualifications do they require?  Thanks!

I’m so happy to have found this site! Looking forward to hearing more about how everyone’s processes are going!

Shottie - if you haven’t found out yet - it’s 8 weeks in country stay, 1 trip, both paretn’s are required to travel

I know it’s been frustrating for all of you just starting in the new program but I thank you from the very bottom of my heart for your trailblazing! We have just started the process and are very excited!

We have 2 bilogical children and plan to adopt a sibling group! so excited!
