Hi
I am Puerto Rican, born in NY, my husband is Irish American and our beautiful son was born in NY from Guyenese Indian birth parents. Now if this isn’t multi-cultural/ethnic/trans-racial, United Nations family, than I don’t know what else is.
All jokes aside, we did not plan this. We were actually in the Hispanic program, due to my Latino roots, we thought this would be better suited for our family. When we got a call from our Social Worker, she asked us if we’d be interested in adopting any other racial group. I remember checking off most boxes that included AA, mixed race, etc. We said of course!
It seems the birth-mom (Guyenese-Indian) selected our family to be her son’s parents. Who would’ve ever imagined? It seems she connected very much to how close we were with our family and wanted that connection for our son! We are forever grateful for her decision to choose us, as we cannot see our lives without our son! He is the most amazing little boy and he will always know about his beautiful birth-mom and his cultural heritage. And yes, while we don’t look like the typical family, who does in today’s age?
We see more and more inter-racial, multi-ethnic, trans-racial families and happy to see what beautiful families are out there. It makes for an interesting world and interesting conversation. I find it gives us an opportunity to talk about the wonderful world of adoption. While there may be other things to be aware of as he grows, we are here to support him every step of the way and willing to seek resources when needed.
I’m not sure, if I addressed any of your concerns, but trust that everything is the way it’s meant to be. Enjoy the journey!
Yvette
Hi Yvette,
I bet you are a beautiful family! And “typical” for these times. My partner and I are white and we adopted a beautiful Latino boy. I spent 6 years living in Central America so I am teaching him Spanish. My partner is Swiss/German and speaks to him in German. He’s got cousins in Switzerland and Senegal…as well as birth family in the US, Mexico and Guatemala. It’s wonderful to be part of a community of multi-racial/multi-ethnic families!
Hi Yvette,
My family is also Puerto Rican, born in PA. We are adopting 2 AA girls!! I am glad to meet you. I love this site. I am so excited to teach my girls to speak Spanish.
