Is anyone still here?

I doesn’t appear that anyone has posted in awhile, so I’m not sure if this is a live thread.  We’ve just completed our home study for a special needs adoption of a lovely 8-year-old girl.

I hope there is someone out there to compare notes with!

Hi. I adopted from Poland this year. I brought home my son 5 months ago.

I adopted 2 boys ages 5 and 7 who are now older, if I can give any insight.. and if you are in NJ I know of a group that is meeting every 5 to 6 weeks that have adoptees talking and helping pre and post adoptive parents if that would be of any help, let me know if you would like information on that it may help you get thru this roller coaster ride. or if I can give you any insight into something.. you can email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Wow, thanks for your quick replies!  This obviously is a live thread.

nbway - How old is your son?  How long did the whole process take?  Do you have a blog to refer me to so that I don’t have to badger you with questions?  Because my learning curve is steep and I want to know everything I can about how these things can go, realizing that our experience might be nothing like anyone else’s.  But no detail is too insignificant for my enquiring mind at this point!

reginamcr - Our prospective daughter just turned 8 two weeks ago.  I presume your boys were brothers?  How did the elder’s adjustment go?  Were there any delayed reaction effects?  I’m in Michigan, so can’t meet with the NJ group, unfortunately, but I’m looking for one here.  Do you have a blog?

I’m also looking to connect with other families adopting from Poland! We just finished our home study for 3 brothers ages 7,6,4 and have 3 boys at home already.

Do any of you use FB at all? I was also hoping to start a small group there since it seems to be an easier format to stay in touch.

We are in Greenville, NC.

Hi, Emily!  We’re on FB, although I tend to be pretty passive there.  But if we start a group, I’m in!  We’re in northern MI, and just about to finish our home study for a little girl who just turned 8 and has special needs.  Which agency are you using?  How did you find the boys?  Wow—six boys!!  You guys are my heroes!!  I’d love to hear your story some day.  I can also be reached at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

nbway—Congratulations!  How long did the whole thing take?  Do you have a blog or anything so I don’t have to badger you with questions?  How old is he?  Is he pretty settled at this point?

Thanks all for responding!  grin

Hi all! Just came across this thread. My husband and I are just starting the process to adopt from Poland.  I would love to connect with others going through the same process. Just today we were sent information on 3 siblings: 8,7,5. We were on the fence as to whether 3 at once would be too many since we currently have no choildren of our own.

i see blogs were mentioned..does anyone have one? Did y’all create a FB group? If so I’d love to join.

Hi, Wyndi!  Congratulations on making the mental leap!  We are also working to adopt an eight-year-old from Poland, but we already have three - 4, 5 and 17.  Personally, I think going from zero to three is going to be a big ask.  Of course, I know nothing about you—I’d have to say that it would have been a big ask for my husband and myself and if we weren’t eased into it.

However, you can absolutely do it if you and your husband are patient and determined, and I would be the last one to dissuade you because there aren’t going to be a lot of people ready to take a sibling group of older children.  Absolutely people have done it successfully.  But you’ll need to do a lot of preparation.

I pooh-pooh’d all the training we had to do (and pay for!) in preparation for our home study, but we really did learn a lot and I’m glad they made us do it.  We thought we knew a lot already, and we did, but we were able to see things in a different way due to that training.  So don’t shy away from it!  Both with older children and siblings, I think there’s a lot to learn.

Read The Connected Child by Karyn Purvis if you can.  Great resource.  There’s a link to it on the Adoption Shop on my blog, but you can get it anywhere.  There are lots of great books, but that’s one of the most-referred and I happen to be reading it now, so can say for sure it’s a good one!

My blog is at  Feel free to use it as a resource, and contact me through there as well if you like.  I’ve been a bit stagnant for awhile, because we’re waiting for some background checks and not much is happening for us, but when things get exciting again I hope that my blog will give you a good preview of the Polish part of the Poland process.

I started a FB group called “families adopting from Poland” . I made it public so people could find us. Would be easier to stay in touch! Sims7, maybe you can post your blog info there?
Wyndi, we are adopting 3 also! Come join us or find me on FB, Emily Campbell Winkler 😊

Wow!  Somehow I missed yalls responses!  So sorry!  Thanks for the message Emily!  I will defintely find you on FB.  Sims7 I will find your blog as well.

Right now we are waiting on more information regarding the kiddos.  I think knowing more about them will help us make that ultimate decision.

Can I ask what agency ya’ll are using?

We are with Christian adoption services in NC.

Hi—I just asked to join the FB group.  Something to consider is that it’s no easier to “see” a group if it’s public versus “closed,” on FB.  That said, however, all of the discussion is visible to the public if the group is “public,” versus only visible to the members if it’s “closed.”  (anyone can see the group exists and see who the members are even if it’s closed).
