How long do adopted babies get Medi-cal?

We found a pediatrician we absolutely love…but they don’t take our insurance, which is limited to the hospital where my husband works (great coverage, but I hate how much turnover there is there…I want a good relationship with doc). Then my husband remembered that he had heard once that adopted babies are automatically on Medi-cal if the mother is. Is that true? If it is, the doc we love takes that! How long does the baby get to be on Medi-cal…is it indefinitely, or does it end at finalization? Please let me know if you have any experience with that! We might have a baby very soon.

Our baby’s first visit was covered under her bm’s insurance but every other visit has been under our insurance.

It is my understanding (from our home study provider) that we should look into to making sure our birthmom are on medical assistance so that would cover her delivery. we were told once the baby is “ours” we are on our own to find insurance. Also, if your bm is not on medical assistance most insurances, it seems maybe not yours :( allow for a delivery coverage on your insurance eventhough you are not the one delivering “your” baby. If that makes sense….I know I checked with my insurance which is care first and they will cover our bm’s delivery. But I think only foster children are on medical. Once they belong to you they need your insurance.

My experience has been through an agency in Ohio so the laws may be different in each state. With that said…the agency applies for Medicaid when the child is born. That should cover all hospital expenses for the baby. If the birth mother has insurance, you would only have to pay what is not covered by her insurance. If she has Medicaid everything is covered. Once the baby is placed with you, in Ohio it’s at 72 hours, your insurance will take over.  This is the way it worked in my situation. I hope this helps!

I think what you are talking about is if a child is adopted from foster care and has special needs and in qualified he keeps the medicaid card until 18. Not all adopted babies, not all children in foster care

I think there are loopholes . . . I am in Texas and we were told that the baby would be on our insurance when we received placement and it was that way with both our kiddos . . . . however we have some good friends . . . in TX . . . that adopted a baby with a lot of medical needs and she was covered until the finalized (for 7 months) by medicaid.  I think you just have to find the right people to ask . . .

We are adopting through foster care and have been told our little one will have medi-cal until 18. I don’t belive it’s the same for other types of adoption.

Our son was on BMs Medicare in the hospital. But as soon as we left the hospital with him, he was on our insurance.
