Hi,

Most important is to comply with your state requirement - some states only accept homestudies from agencies but if yours does not, the decision is fine.  Get a few references if that helps you to feel better about your choice

On the other hand, at the IAC Center we generally recommend that people select their adoption agency or attorney first for several reasons. Some agencies require that they do their own homestudy (they have required and important educational aspects); and some agencies and attorneys have homestudy providers they work best with so it’s best to let them pick for you. In addition, homestudies expire so it is important that you decide who will do your adoptin so you don’t waste time with a homestudy before you are actually being helped to find a child to adopt.

Best of luck,

Thank you. My state doesnt require a agency to complete. I am working with an attorney and she recommended an agent to complete a homestudy. But i found a situation in Michigan that they require a HS to be complete by an agency. Which sucks and now i cant apply for that situation because my homestudy is being completed by an agenct not an agency. How will i find out which state requires agency or not?
