Getting the amended Birth Certificate NY state

Hello - I am wondering if any other NY families could offer some direction in obtaining our son’s amended birth certificate.  We finalized in March but when I go on line to try and figure out how to get the new birth certificate there is no clear answer.  I have been bounced from one person to the next on the phone.  Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

I totally understand your frustration.  We finalized our daughter’s adoption in March of 2011 in Erie County.  At the time, we we’re told on average it takes approximately 8 months.  We received her amended birth certificate a few days before Christmas.  Then, once we had that, we filed for her ss # which took another 7 weeks.  I’ve been told if you call NYS dept of vital statistics and tell them you need to get your child a passport, they will get the birth certificate to you faster. I’ll never understand why it takes so long.  It almost felt like a punishment for not being able to give birth to a child!

Was he born in NY? We live in NY but adopted out of state. We downloaded the form from the vital records site and copied drivers license, sent amount required depending on how many copies you want and they send it out pretty quickly. We did one from PA and two from IN. Once they have received the adoption decree and with the info I told you they can send out the amended BC.

Can you keep a copy of the original for your child?

EST~ I have all 3 of my children’s OBC. They have to be obtained before you finalize the adoption. I recommend to   everyone I know that adopts to do this. They do not just give you the original with the birth parents names on it, you have to request it. It’s something I believe all adoptee’s should have.

Jameszdad have you gotten the info you needed yet?
