Getting Families Thinking About Kids with Special Needs
For those of you who have adopted internationally and have a child with special needs, what attracted you to the program? What kinds of things do you think would be helpful in getting families interested and informed of special needs kids who are available and waiting now? Any thoughts or ideas would be great!

We were very open from the beginning about adopting a child with special needs. We could have given birth to a child with special needs as no child is perfect there is a child that is perfect for us and we are so glad we found her. Our agency did not know about her diagnosis of moderate Cerebral Palsy till we already had her referral and since it didn’t matter to us everything was a go. If we had the money we would love to adopt again internationally and a child with special needs is preferred! It was a great experience. Just like adopting is not for everyone having a child with special needs sometimes takes a special heart. Possibly meeting children with special needs will help them understand what their future child’s life may be like, surgeries, doctors, resources and support programs, as well as funds available for people with disabilities. Our daughter is playing baseball this year and loving being the only one in her school in a wheelchair at her French Immersion school and excels at it, she gets a lot of attention that she soaks up for all it’s worth!
I don’t know if I should respond or not but if it can help GREAT! We were not very open to put on our paper work that we would accept different problems mostly because we felt like life has enough problems without asking for them but when asked if we would take a baby that the mother was doing drugs and the baby could be mentally challenged we did not hesatate I plainly remember saying “if its the Lords will it will work out” I lean on that quite a lot! now our son is “fine” but he cried for the first 10 months he is now only 11 months so its all very fresh.
I know there are others like us out there if asked its all it takes. I mean how many of us would say I want a special needs baby when we first find out we are pregnant but when the sonagram reveals there are problems we rise to the challenge.
