Hello there,

I posted this elsewhere on the boards but as it’s gained momentum I think it’s worth starting a new topic!

I am an adoptive mother to a beautiful baby boy after three failed (or as I prefer to call them, ‘disrupted’) adoptions. I am really disturbed by the way adoption is being treated by the hit FOX show “Glee.” For example, a young birthmother is vowing to get ‘custody’ of her daughter back, long after the adoption has been finalized. She also screamed at the adoptive mother to ‘stop pretending to be her REAL mother!’ This is not helpful to anyone in the adoption scenario, and I fear that Glee’s target demographic - teenagers - will come away from the show believing that adoption is a temporary situation, not a permanent one.

As a result, I have started a petition asking FOX to produce a public service announcement, to air during the show, letting people know that this tale is fictional, and pointing them to where they can get REAL adoption information.

Would you be willing to sign my petition, please? I would love it if you would also share via Facebook, Twitter, email, etc. I am being interviewed by a major newspaper this afternoon and it appears we may actually win this, if we get enough signatures.

I too got a handful of signatures from my FB nation. Hopefully more will sign - agreed that we need to do something to keep the right messages about adoption out there!

At first I thought “but its a tv show” and then I thought what would it look like through the eyes of an adopted child and saw it completely different.

Keith - it’s so refreshing to hear you say that and thank you. So many people are blowing this off as “just a TV show,” whereas an adoptee might not feel that way. A young girl facing an unplanned pregnancy and considering adoption may not feel that way, either.

We can never underestimate the impact of the media! We have to be vocal in what is acceptable and not be spoon fed what “sells’. It is our responsibility to model for our children what is and is not acceptable. Thanks for stepping up to the plate Amber!
