Formula?
What do people think about formula brands? How do you decide? We don’t consume very much dairy or soy in our household; I have conflicted feelings about giving either to our baby. Is there an organic brand that is a better value than others?

With my first I used the expensive name brand formula, with my last 2 I used the generic Wal-Mart brand, they do make Organic (The green label) and it will save you a ton of money. I talked to my doctor and he said there is not much difference. Dairy based is better for most babies than soy, unless there is an allergy. If money is no object, then you can Google organic formulas and there are many. Also, you can buy breast milk, but it is very expensive. For my last 2 I used Parents Choice Premium and they did well on it.
I use Enfamil brand and have switched to the Gentlease to reduce gas and it works great! I used this brand for my other son too, and switched to the Costco brand and it was fine. However, I did the Target brand too and he did NOT like that one at all! Both said they were similar to enfamil. So if you try a generic, start small to make sure they like it.
Hospitals usually give similac, but it doesn’t even resemble milk in the bottle, so I have been partial to enfamil.
We use Similac because that’s what our babies were on when they came to us (at 5 and 13 days). We’re looking at generics and store brands now, as our son is apparently allergic to milk. Since we’re having to switch formulas anyway, we want to look at ways to save a little money.
We used Enfamil with all four of our babies (two foster, two adopted). Enfamil Gentlease helped with babies who were gassy and spat up a lot. My older son started with Gentlease and was switched to Enfamil ProSoBee (Soy based) due to gastric reflux issues and that helped him a lot. Also, using bottled water rather than tap water helped (we have well water). Our younger son was fed nearly exclusively donated breast milk for the first three months of his life and did exceptionally on that, including not catching any colds that afflicted his older brother and mother (me). Then he was switched to Enfamil ProSoBee until he was a year old.
The reason I used only Enfamil is due to a study I read about in 2007 funded by the National Institutes of Health which showed that babies fed Enfamil with added ARA and DHA for four months had the same brain and eye acuity at four years old as babies fed exclusively breast milk for ten months. The reason, they theorized, is that Enfamil was the only formula at the time that tried to match the levels of ARA and DHA in breast milk, unlike other formula makers who added less. That was in 2007. Formula manufacturers try to improve their formulas all the time so I can’t say if Enfamil is still the only formula adding ARA and DHA in amounts equivalent to breast milk. As for breast milk, it is highly frowned upon to charge anything for breast milk other than the cost of supplies. Breast milk is supposed to be donated and there are many women who produce more than what their own infants can use who would much rather donate it than see it go down the drain. Breast milk is stored frozen safely. For more info on finding donated breast milk, check out this site.

Of our four babies, our son who started life on donated breast milk had by far the fewest issues with acid reflux, gas pain, and spitting up. That said, some babies on breast milk also suffer from reflux.
We use a mix of Baby’s Only Organic toddler formula and Enfamil Infant formula.
The DHA and ARA that is added to all formulas is done through a process that involves hexane. Organic formula does not contain DHA and ARA for that reason.

I believe very strongly in organic products, especially milk.
