Educational Program: Attachment from Infant to Adult

Adoptive Families of Houston invites you to an educational event to discuss the all-important, but often-misunderstood, topic: ATTACHMENT. Attachment is something parents must work at every day of their child’s life, but what is it and how do you do it? There is plenty of conflicting information about “attachment” on the Internet, TV, and out of the mouths of friends and family to keep us confounded.

Janie Cravens, will explain what attachment really is, how deep attachments are formed, how to enhance and increase attachment, when to call for HELP and when to calm down.  Attaching with your sweet, little baby may seem like a no brainer, but there are factors that affect attachment even at this stage.  And, as your children grow older, it is possible to damage your attachment and put distance between you and your kids.  Join in this lively discussion and go home with new insights and ideas for your family life.

- Why does attachment matter to people?  Isn’t this just the latest psycho-babble trend?

- How do you know if your child has attachment problems?

- Is it hopeless if our child came to us later?  What if our child experienced abuse or neglect?

- Isn’t it true that the younger the baby the easier it will be for attaching?

- Do racial differences affect attachment?

- Is there anything I can do to get closer to my older kids and teenagers?

Janie Cravens is an LCSW with more than 30 years of experience in adoption, infertility, orphan care, attachment and birth parent concerns.  She is a pioneer of open adoption.  Janie resides in Austin where she owns a consulting company, Adoption Development Resources, offering pre and post-placement counseling/consultation for members of the triad, educational workshops on all topics for domestic and international adoptions, home studies, expert testimony for legal cases, and consultation to agencies and orphanages around the world.  She has written the curriculum for training orphanage workers on increasing attachment, as well as chairs the Attachment Research Committee of Austin.

Janie’s presentations are interactive, fun and informal with ample time for Q&A throughout the evening. We hope you can join us, and we encourage you to invite extended family members since this is a great opportunity for adoption education.

Light refreshments will be served.  We regret that childcare will not be available.
