Special-Needs Adoption
Developmental Delays
We adopted our son from China almost two years ago.. He was born with tetralogy of fallot (heart condition) and had heart surgery in China at one year old. He was hospitalized following surgery for 25 days and we think that is what has caused his developmental delays.
He is four years old but developmentally he is 2 1/2 years old so he is not talking yet. He does understand all we are saying.
We have him in Pre-K at school and he works with therapists weekly.
Hard to know what to expect of him based on his delays and it’s hard to communicate with him. He does know some sign language.
Just looking for someone I can identify with who will understand these struggles I’m having

It must be so hard for you and him. Are the delays global (physical, emotional, intellectual, and social? Often major surgery will slow a child down. The trauma of that, having no one with him and being adopted into a new family, culture and language is a lot.
Have you read Toddler Adoption by Hopkins Best?
What therapists? speech? PT?OT or psychological?
pre K may be a bit much for him to handle, he might do better at home until he is better connected to you and more secure.
You need to treat him more like a 2 year old then a 4 year old until he catches up a little.
