Background issue.

We are wanting to adopt but I have a background issue and am wanting to know if anyone else has had to traverse this type of thing.  It is not a crime that caused harm to anyone but I was just wanting to know if anyone had any idea how this would affect our chances.  Thanks.

I think it depends on whether it’s a criminal offense, if I recall correctly from my adoptions.  We had a misdemeanor that was non criminal and, while it caused us a lot of grief in that we had to provide an extra background check and letter from the state where the misdemeanor took place, it did not adversely affect our adoptions.

If it is a criminal offense, I would check with an adoption attorney first before sharing any information with your social worker or adoption agency.  Not to be secretive, but to get some solid advice on the best way to proceed.

Good luck!

Rules vary state to state. For some it is how long ago the offense was. Some are never OK (abuse of a child for example).
Some offenses can be expunged.
I would check what is OK
