Anybody out there?

Noticed the last post was 4 years ago, but I’m looking for support as we have just begun to entertain the idea of adopting from Rwanda. I’d love to hear from anyone who has been there and done that so I can get an idea of what to expect. Thanks!

Last I heard they were closed to adoption while they worked on becoming Hague certified

The U.S. State Department has not yet indicated on its website that Rwanda has lifted its moratorium on adoptions, although the Hague Convention has been implemented.  You might want to contact the State Department or the U.S. Embassy in Rwanda for an update on the current situation.  Meanwhile, remember that the most authoritative source of Internet information about adoption is the State Department’s adoption and Hague website at adoption.state.gov.

That website says Rwanda is a Hague country, but interconnect adoptions are still on hold until procedures are finalized. We are just now considering this, so it may be awhile before we’re ready to take the leap. I’m hoping they allow it soon. They are in the process of shutting down orphanages which is putting a strain on extended family members who can’t take care of them or simply don’t want them. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see so many children uncared for and unloved.  I don’t see how the country can afford not to allow them to be adopted out.

We adopted from Rwanda in 2009 and 2011. Both of our adoptions were done independently (without an agency). We travel to Rwanda a couple of times a year for work. We have stayed in touch with the NCC staff responsible for adoptions in Rwanda. We would be very surprised if Rwanda ever opened up again for international adoption as their focus is to promote domestic adoption. Feel free to pm me.
