Adoption Agencies (Reviews)

Adoption Advocates, Inc

Has anyone used or had experience with Adoption Advocates, Inc in Florida?  It is a small family run agency, run by Tara Hayes and her mother Kathleen Hayes.  We would appreciate any feedback.
Thank you.

I am based in Dublin Ireland we had registered with them and then pulled our application because of the experience of some of the couple in Ireland.

There have been some successful adoptions into Ireland, but there are very mixed opinions of AA, in relation to BM expenses, the service they provide - returning phone calls, efficiency of turning paperwork around etc.  One couple report them to the FBI, our local police and the US body responsible for accreditation - they received a full refund of all funds.  The BM they we match with had never met with the agency and the Social security number didn’t match either ...

We adopted our son in Florida last winter through AA.  We would NEVER recommend them.  Little to NO communication before during or after adoption.  They could have helped us so much by letting us know about the process.  Instead we were in the dark.  They also sent an invoice of where all of the money went for our adoption.  There was over a thousand dollars not accounted for.  When we questioned they gave a lame response of this all takes time in 6 months we would find out if we would be receiving any money back.  We kissed that money good bye.  Avoid this agency like the plague!

Beware! I would not recommend this agency!  In my opinion and first hand experience with them, they are dishonest and will take your money. Since our failed adoption with them (we never got a baby and paid over $30,000), I have been contacted by several other people that have had a horrible experience with them. They are dishonest, misleading and very difficult to deal with. If something goes wrong or if you have any questions they are very rude or you can’t get them to call you back. If and when they do, they do not “help” you through the process, but they will talk down to you, treat you rudely and make you feel like you are a nuisance to them….no matter how much you have paid them.  In my opinion/first hand experience…It blows my mind how these people (Tara and Kathleen…including their attorney Jeannie Tate) are still in the adoption business. The sad thing about the whole process with them is that we hired an “adoption consultant” prior to adopting, so we wouldn’t get taken advantage of by agencies. This “adoption consultant” referred us to Adoption Advocates!  When we contacted the adoption consultant and told them what was happening, they told us they couldn’t/wouldn’t help us and nothing to do with them and stop calling. Makes you wonder who’s working with who.

Renee22, my wife and I are considering adopting through this agency in the near future. Could you elaborate a little more on your experience? What was the failure with the adoption? Your post is making us cautious because they are asking $43,600 in fees on top of the $8,500 we already paid to the referring agency. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

We had a very positive experience with Adoption Advocates of Florida.  Yes, frankandheike its not cheap.  Adoption never is, your quote is commensurate with our experience (we adopted twice with 2 different agencies including AA).  We had a failed adoption too at AA - because the BM changed her mind at the last minute literally right before we turned the car on to drive to FL.  Adoptions don’t fail because the agency causes it, good grief!  AA had nothing to do with the failure.  We did get a partial refund of fees through AA for that + got put at the top of the list for the next avail placement.  So they handled it right.

Jeanne Tate’s office was also great and fought for us in court against a birthfather who was a career felony criminal in FL, had no job, assets, any way to support the child, etc. and had just put his name on the putative registry to get back at the birthmother for dumping him. They kept us in the loop too.  Tate’s office is the best adoption law firm in FL, ask anyone.

“Haters gonna hate” I guess.  Remember, for every 1 complainer on here, there’s probably 50-100 couples that had a great experience with AA and never thought about going on an online forum.  Cheers and good luck!

I am currently working with an agency who matched us with a birth mom at Adoption advocates last week through their networking program.  I spoke with Tara at Adoption Advocates only one time.  She did not provide me with much information and I felt the conversation was awkward.  This is our 2nd adoption so I have an idea of what I am talking about.  Anyway, we were set to wire her the $20,000 or so by monday but i had a few questions that i wanted answered regarding birthmom, contract, and expenses.  Tara would not answer any of our questions.  Instead she told me that what i wanted was “up to date information” and that the birthmom needed a committed family now.  She is no longer considering us as adoptive parents.  Its just crazy to me that this woman was not willing to answer contract questions and instead basically tell us we were not committed.  I am beyond angry because we have been trying to sort through our finances all week.  This adoption would have cost us almost $60000 between our agency and Tara’s fees.  We were very committed but Tara was not willling to communicate with us.  I feel that all she was interested in was getting that $20000.  We hope to be matched again soon.  But i cant help but feel that she just yanked my child out of my arms.

My husband and I just finished our adoption through AA and we will NEVER work with them AGAIN!

That being said, God placed us with our daughter despite this agencies inefficiencies, lack of communication, and ever changing charges.

They (like others in this thread) couldn’t account for monies paid to them.

Neglected to follow up with the BF (when he was amenable to sign over his rights) and because of that neglect, cost us $5k more dollars to terminate his rights.
We asked for simple updates and got radio silence until it suited their needs for money.

They neglected to send us invoices from the lawyers and then sent us multiples invoices at once and expected us to pay immediately or threatened the finalization of our adoption. When confronted, all they could do was argue with us and then again suggest we put off finalization until we could afford adoption.

They were rude, secretive, unorganized, and unprofessional. We will not be using them for our next adoption.
