    Break Through

We are Caucasian parents with 2 older (22 & 19) birth children.  Three years ago, we adopted a (now) 6 year-old African-American girl who we’ve began fostering when she was 2 weeks old.  We live in a very homogenous community and our daughter attends a relatively homogenous school.  It is a challenge for her/us to find playmates who “look like” her.  We’ve read all the books and done what we can think of to help her find her unique identity in our white world.  We attended PACT Trans-racial Adoption Camp a few summers ago which gave us some great ideas and tools. Still, our daughter has struggled mightily with her identity and her outward difference from her family.  We worry about that a lot.  We share many of the trials and challenges that I’ve read about on this website.  Yesterday, we got an email from our daughter’s kindergarten teacher who told us that the class was having a discussion on how families can be different.  One child talked about how her grandmother lives with them while another brave soul shared that her parents are divorced and don’t live together.  Our daughter then raised her hand and said, “Some families have one brown person and the rest are white.”  She then volunteered to the class that she was adopted.  A classmate asked what that meant.  Our daughter explained that she came from her birth mom’s tummy but now she lives with her family. There is hope.
