We have decided to adopt an African American boy out of the foster system.  We have an informational meeting on the 24th of October.  Then they say that it will take three months after that to receive our precious boy.  I am so worried about the home study process.  If you have any insight into this, please let us know the process.  We are a Caucasian family with a boy 7yrs old and wants a brother so very badly.  We hope our boy is at least five yrs old.

Hello! We are also trying to adopt from the foster system, so I thought I’d just offer my 2 cents. Our HS was approved in June of this year. We took orientation through our local FC dept, but had our homestudy done by a private agency. Our classes took about 6 weeks or so. Our homestudy took about 2.5 months at the most. There was alot of paperwork! We had to have background checks, physicals, and fire inspection by the local fire department, and set up our rooms. Everyone was so supportive of our decision to adopt - but I must say it took them a little while to fill out their reference forms and return! LOL

Once all that was done, they assigned a local SW to come to our home and talk to us. There is nothing to fear here, although I was nervous about it too. There is a long questionaire that you fill out, and then she basically went over it with us and asked questions. First visit she was here about 2 hours. We talked about our lives together, why we want to adopt, our childhoods, our parenting experience. Basically, it was kinda like meeting someone for the first time, and having to share your life with that person. We laughed alot, and even cried once when DH talked about his mother passing. After that she left us to type up her report. She returned about a month later, had us read the report, asked some clarifying questions, or had us make any changes to the homestudy that were needed.

We have applied for about 100 children, and have not been matched yet -so I’m surprised that they’re saying it would only be about 3 months to have a child in your home. We do prefer a caucasian child(ren)...but other than that are pretty open, and we’re looking across the US. I have heard from some people that it can take a few months to 2 years. SW’s I have spoken to have had as many as 200 applications for some children, and it takes them a while to review and respond. Hang in there tho - the homestudy seems daunting, but it’s really not. She didn’t open cupboards or look under beds for dust bunnies. They just want to make sure the home is safe, and that you’ve got the love and attention to provide a child.

You answered many of my questions.  We are just starting the process and was wondering if we might have a child by August to start the new school year.  We are looking at ages 10 - 13, probably a girl.  Where do I go to get a homestudy started, and how can I find classes in my area.  This seems to be the hardest about getting started.  Thank you!!  God bless!!!

We had a beautiful African American foster child from the time he was 9 days old…unfortunately he had to go through withdrawal before we could take him home from the hospital…he is now 31/2 and his adoption was final in November!  He is now our youngest; we have two teenagers, 16 and 18, still in high school.  Jaden is the love of our life…what a joy he is I can’t even put in words…

We did not go into foster care to adopt, but rather to help children out…well that certainly changed quickly…!  We had several placements but when Jaden came into our lives, he was so all alone in this world…

What an experience it was to fall in love with him….I have to be honest, I did not love him the day I took him home from the hospital…I CARED deeply for this little 4 pound baby boy who had no one in the NICU unit to love him…but it was certainly different from when we took home our other children…

As time went on and we got to really and truly care for this little baby…things started to change…it is such an overwhelming experience to fall in love with a child…far far different from anything we’d ever experienced.  I had the opportunity to stay home with Jaden for the first year of his life, but then after I went back to work, my husband and I found ourselves racing home after work to see Jay!  It seemed our love was growing daily and it was delightful.

Jaden has a few issues left over from his awful beginnings, but nothing we can’t work through…He has more love than he knows what to do with and is a happy and joyful little boy.

Dealing with paperwork and the various agencies and court system was worth our final result…now we are a complete family….

I wish everyone out there patience and good luck…I hope you will all have the wonderful experience that we’ve had…
