In my most recent blog post, Another Home Study, I discuss the need for a SECOND Home Study since the wait for our Domestic Newborn adoption is taking longer than we had anticipated.

Have any of you had to re-do your paperwork, applications, or start over with new agencies or adoption professionals too?

Yes, we are adopting from Korea and we are in the middle of the paperwork re-do process right now. That includes: updated financials, medicals, income tax forms, fingerprinting, and homestudy. Our social worker just visited last Monday, though that visit didn’t take as long as the first one did.
It is really frustrating! I thought we’d be parents by now. It was hard enough to do this paperwork once. On a positive note, we had photocopies of our original documents, so at least we were able to use them as a guide. It is definitely easier than figuring stuff out for the first time.

Hi Renee,

We had to do an update, because we waited longer than a year.  We had two disappointments as well, and the feeling that we were being passed by.  Of course, in the end, we were chosen to parent our amazing, perfect child.

It certainly was frustrating to go through all the background checks that had expired, but we had actually anticipated having to do an update.  Our understanding of Texas law is that the initial home study is only valid for 6 months, then must be updated within 30 days of placement, with an in-home visit with all family members.  It’s a crazy system!

Have you looked into http://www.MyAdoptionAdvisor.com?  You don’t need to just sit back and wait, there are some great, quick, effective ways you can network for yourself, and Hal Kaufman can walk you through them.

Best, Kay

Thanks for your replies. We are actually looking into new agencies, after finding the customer service we’ve received from our first agency less than superior, even after the two failed adoptions.
Found American Adoptions, Inc. after some research and haven’t seen a bad word about them. They have facilitated over 300 adoptions annually, so I’m feeling good about starting a new process with them very soon.

I was going to suggest the group “Families for Private Adoption” to search for leads on your own, but then I saw that you have been in contact with American Adoptions. That’s where we ended up too, after being afraid that we wouldn’t be able to do the whole process independently. We have loved American Adoptions. They have been such a great support system. We were chosen by a birthmother 3 weeks after we went live on their profile site. We’re now waiting for her to have the baby. One of the things I love about American is that a real person answers the phone all the time - even on the weekends - and gets you in touch with who you need to talk to. We feel very connected to them during our wait.
