Adoption Blog: The Perfect Blend

We Got a Referral!

I’ve been rereading my posts so far and, I’ll admit it, I’ve been sounding, well … whiny. What has been the theme of nearly every post? Oh, it’s so difficult to be me. The waiting has gotten to me. I’m sure it gets to all of us, but I haven’t handled it too gracefully.

And then, out of the blue, everything changed. We got a referral!

It's a boy, and he's got a beautiful little smile that's somehow both newly addictive and completely familiar. It's a face I pause to check several times a day (on the photos contained in the packet of information our adoption agency gave us) and a face I feel as if I've known all my life. In the past week, since we accepted the referral—it wasn't even a choice, really, because in my gut it seems he is already ours—I have gone between being utterly thrilled and breathtakingly afraid, passing through numbness more than once. He's a person now. My son actually exists and is no longer just an idea of a third baby. It's so exhilarating to know that, but now it just seems so huge, the immense weight of knowing he deserves my very best, all the time. It's a new variation on an old, familiar feeling and, while it's terrifying, it is nonetheless very, very good.

I'm sure I'll have tough days ahead, when I'm aching to hold my beautiful baby and the paperwork isn't coming through and everything seems so unfair. But now, there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel: His name is Dylan Lennon-Dae.

Congrats! That is so exciting. Do you mind me asking how long your wait ended up being? We are using Spence-Chapin and in the process of waiting now and am curious to see your wait time.

Thanks everyone and congratulations to you, too, Gavin and Tristan’s mommy!  Lauren, our wait was just under seven months.  We were open to several mild to moderate special needs, which I’ll be talking about in an upcoming post, though.  I’m positive that made the process move a little faster for us.
