Congratulations to the winner, AFC member Jaylene. Here's the memory she shared:
"I was a high school choir teacher, and got 'the call' during a rehearsal. I announced my news and had 100 high school kids come crowd around me, jumping up and down and giving me hugs. It was the best feeling in the world! Two days later, we brought home our beautiful little girl."

It's a moment that no adoptive parent ever forgets -- learning that a birth mother has selected you or that a referral is on the way, and that parenthood, finally, is on the horizon. Where were you and what were you doing when you got "The Call"? What was your immediate reaction?

I will NEVER forget that call!  I was at work and it was about 6 weeks before he was to be born.  I was overwhelmed and so very happy. I think I was actually speechless for a while and then I called my husband.  Later that night, we were able to speak directly with our birth mother and we have continued contact with her family even after 17 years.

I had been thinking about talking to my husband about trying to adopt again, but hadn’t done so yet.  I was at work and got a call from our previous adoption worker.  She asked if we were interested in adopting another child.  I was stunned.  She went on to say this little miracle was 7 days old and a biological sibling to our son!  I immediately called my hubby to have that talk….needless to say we are blessed with 2 wonderful sons!!

I was at home when the call came that I got a referral.  I had to literally throw my teenage niece of the computer so I could get the email.  One of our daycare moms came in shortly after I opened the email to find us (my mom, niece and I) crying at the computer.  She joined in the “bawl-fest” since she too is a mother of an adopted child.

It was incredible when we got the call for our second daughter.  (Actually, a text).  We were at my husband’s grandfather’s visitation, and naturally, everyone was quite sad.  At the conclusion of the visitation, a text appeared on my cell phone from our social worker that said, “You’ve been chosen!”  It may sound corny, but it was a truly a circle-of-life day for us!

My husband and I are still waiting for our call. I can only imagine the joy and relief that comes from being chosen by a birthmother. We are literally on pins and needles waiting and cannot wait to be blessed with our new addition.

I will never forget that sunny day in October. I was feeling sad and defeated and was trying to comfort myself with a little retail therapy at a local outlet. I had just walked out of a children’s store, where I didn’t buy anything because I felt like our day would never come… I walked across the parking lot, my cell phone started ringing. It was our social worker. She said “Oh, I am so glad I got you…I always like to call the Mommies first” and I KNEW!!! I frantically looked for any piece of paper I could find in my car. I ended up writing the information about our referral on the back of a piece of junk mail. I still have it today. I tried calling my husband at work but of course I only got voice mail so I drove straight there. But he called me back before I could get to his office so I just said “hey, how does it feel to be a daddy!!?” It was the best phone call I ever got to make.

I will never forget the call. It was the Friday before our 17th wedding anniversary. We were adopting from Vietnam and the program was about to be shut down the following week. If we weren’t placed with a child our paper trail would be returned to us for us to start again with another country. I was on my way to work, on the ever congested 405 in Los Angeles, our case worker called and asked if I was near a computer. She said she had photos and information of our 8 months old daughter who was waiting for us in Lang Son.
The first time I saw her picture was on a friends computer, in a trailer, on a dusty loading dock, in San Pedro California. I work on a television show and we were on location for the day, I celebrated with my ENTIRE crew and cast of “24"and then went home and celebrated with my husband and 1st born daughter all night.
One of the best days of our lives!

It was a Friday afternoon. A friend and her daughter were going to stop by. We meet through our adoption agency, we were kind of mentoring them. You see we have one adopted daughter already. They are almost a year behind us in their adoption. They were running late and got to our house about 1 1/2 hours late. As soon as they arrived the phone rang and My friend said “I just bet that’s your call” meaning our referral. I laughed and said, yea right.
The girls were playing upstairs, my husband was outside in our greenhouses working.
When I answered the phone I almost fell over, it was our referral. The woman on the other end said would you like you husband to hear this too?
Me, my friend and both our kids ran to the backdoor and yelled for my husband to come and get a phone call.
He said he was busy and would call whoever back. The kids and my friend yelled no, no it is THE PHONE CALL!
The whole time they were all jumping up and down.
He finally came to the backdoor and they were still yelling it’s the phone call!
He started to take his dirty work boots off I yelled who cares just get the phone..
The woman started to tell us where our new daughter is from in China, how old she was, her Chinese name, her health, etc.
I was scribbling all this information down, I still have that first note, even though some of the writting is kind of read.
My friend meanwhile called her husband and said he had to come over right now. He was at our house in a matter of minutes.
My friend and her husband were just so excited.
The agency was sending pictures via e-mail so every minute or two my husband was checking the computer.
We started calling relatives and friend, but the most excited people was that family that was visiting us.
That family who had become our friends through our adopton agency.
We are still friends to this day, and will be forever bonded by sharing such wonderful news.

Our call came on February 1, 2012. I was driving to pick up our youngest son when the car phone rang with a number I did not recognize. I on a whim answered it and it was a birth mother counselor who told me she had a situation she wanted to discuss with me. I remember immediately tearing up and asking her if I needed to pull my car over. She recommended that I pull over. smile I reminded myself this was just a situation, not a match so I took a deep breath and drove on as we discussed the information. Outside of my son’s preschool, I called my husband and presented the information to him as well. We decided this mother was perfect for us and called the worker back. As I thanked God for the journey we were on, I walked into my son’s school to pick him up and immediately burst into tears. The teacher ran up to me, and I blubbered out that we had just been matched with a birth mom, would be talking to her that night, she was due in a month and that it all happened ON MY BIRTHDAY! smile I will never forget how God told me I would have a daughter in His time, not my time and yet He chose my birthday to present her to me.

We found our little girl on the Rainbow Children’s web site in early July of 2006.  I was browsing and trying to deicde what to do agency wise.  I sent a blitz out to a group of agencies with our info, we were paper ready and just hanging loose.  Things were beginning to change.  We were older parents. Two weeks later I figured nothing was going to happen and low and behold I get a call from an agency that I had requested info from.  Sadly, the child I desired was already spoken for.  :(  But, a light was to be shown when the family viewing her rejected her and on July 8th 2006 I got the call from the agency while I was visiting our pediatrician.  It was 3:00PM and I was talking with the dr. about medical issues, specifically the heart when I got the call.  Yes, I jumped up and down and of course we wanted her and who cares what her medical is, she is for us!!!  Life has never been the same and she is a joy.
