Embracing the challenges of adoption requires a sense of humor
In the nearly four years since we adopted our daughter domestically, contact with her biological mother has been inconsistent. But the last time she called, I had a plan, and hope communication will become more regular.
In adoption, the word "entitlement" is fraught with emotion. But I believe our children need us to feel entitled to parent, to claim them wholly as ours.
I've come to realize that friends and family can't truly understand open adoption, or my sadness about not hearing from my daughter's biological mother.
When Tony and I first began talking about adoption, he wasn't sure it was something he wanted to do. Since we met our daughter, hours after her birth, he's been forging a meaningful, magical bond.
I'm used to questions about my family's physical dissimilarities, but I had never before encountered such harsh condemnation of birth mothers. Is it worth trying to get people like this to understand?
A Mother's Day ode to my relentlessly enthusiastic mom, who supported, and sometimes pushed, us through our adoption process.
Our daughter doesn't resemble us one iota. Funnily enough, she acts like us 100 percent.
