Embracing the challenges of adoption requires a sense of humor

I once thought open adoption meant sending monthly photos and updates. Now we consider our daughter's birthmother family. How did we get from there to here, and where will our relationship head in the future?
After bringing home my baby through domestic adoption, I was surprised to discover how lonely I felt. So I began venturing out on a mission -- to meet and befriend other mommies.
That's when it hit me -- gone was the toddler and before me sat, quite stubbornly I might add, a bonafide little kid.
I used to baby my pet cat. Then I became a mom to a baby through domestic adoption. Scarlet has adjusted (mostly) gracefully.
She's here all week folks. And then some.
In the nearly four years since we adopted our daughter domestically, contact with her biological mother has been inconsistent. But the last time she called, I had a plan, and hope communication will become more regular.
