After hearing back from many AdoptiveFamiliesCircle.com members who shared their stories, I'm pleased to kick off the Open Adoption Truth project with a video of Sadie, an adoptee who's also a birth mom and an adoptive mom.
At first, the blended-family dynamics common in my daughter's biological mother's circle surprised me, but who knows better than a mom in an open adoption that you don't have to be related by marriage or DNA to love one another and call each other family?
As the mother of an adopted child, there are a few idioms that now sound idiotic to me and definitely make me think twice when I hear them.
Our recent visit with our daughter's birth family felt like one big rush, with little time for heartfelt conversations. I came away with a few memories to treasure, and lessons learned about making the next visit go more smoothly.
I once thought open adoption meant sending monthly photos and updates. Now we consider our daughter's birthmother family. How did we get from there to here, and where will our relationship head in the future?
