Thinking Back and Looking Ahead
I've changed from wanting a child who looks like me to insisting on one who doesn't.

What adoption has taught me about fatherhood, family, and myself
I've changed from wanting a child who looks like me to insisting on one who doesn't.
We've recently jumped back into the fray of home visits, background checks, and endless piles of paperwork to complete a second adoption.
Is there a right way to explain to a child how unknown adult circumstances forever altered his life? I think about this often, and while yes, there might be a right way to go about it, it won't be easy. What will I say when my son asks why?

We hoped that not giving our son a new name would help him take something from the culture he had to leave behind.
