When we faced a possible disruption, I realized that the pain and loss I was feeling was only a fraction of the birth parents' pain, as they decided whether or not to parent.

We didn't know what to expect when we traveled to meet our newborn daughter at the hospital. Thanks to an amazing nursing staff and hospital administrators, my first days as a mother were incredibly special.
The wait to adopt is unpredicatable, and can feel unendurable to those in the thick of it. But, as I found, you just have to focus on your goal of being a family and open yourself to the whole journey that will take you there.
We knew through all our adoption training that disruptions were a risk--and I still firmly believe that the revocation period is important--though, when it happens to you, that training and knowledge are no comfort.
I find writing therapeutic. So, when we found ourselves in the throes of what looked to be an adoption disruption and I had trouble smiling, speaking, or praying, I wrote instead.
Nineteen hours after getting "the call," here I was, holding a precious baby girl in my arms, flooded with joy as well as heartbreak for her birth mother.
